Tax
All employees within Australia need to be in possession of a Tax File Number (TFN) which can be obtained from the Tax Office within Australia – the simplest way to make an application for a TFN is via the web site at www.ato.gov.au. Your TFN must then be provided to each employer you have during your travels around Oz. Australian Tax Office

Superannuation
All persons employed within Australia are entitled to what is known as Superannuation – this is a payment made on top of your weekly salary at a rate of 9% - in order for your employer to make these payments all employees must have an account with a superannuation fund. For more information visit the Australian Tax Office superannuation website at: Australian Tax Office

Opening a Bank account
Opening a bank account in Australia is simple providing you present to the bank, within 90 days of arriving in Oz, taking your passport with you. If you wait any longer you will need to provide the bank with more detailed ID documentation. You will need to arrange a bank account in order for WANA to deposit your Aussie $$! Until you have an Australian Bank Account, simply continue to use your plastic cards from home in the Automatic Teller Machines found all over Australia.

Insurance
If you work for an agency such as WANA all your insurances are covered excepting if you are a Midwife in which case you are not covered to work in Delivery Suite, although if you are working in the country areas of Australia WANA has devised a method of employment which enables you to be covered for this area of Midwifery.

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
If you want to work in Western Australia and have arrived from another country or another state of Australia you must have MRSA swabs before you are able to work in a West Australian hospital. These swabs can be done for you in the WANA office or alternative arrangements can be made. Should you by some chance produce a positive swab, WANA will still be able to employ you following a simple treatment regime.

Criminal Checks
Some states of Australia request a Criminal Screening prior to you commencing work in hospitals within that particular state – WANA can advise you on this process and assist with the application.

Professional Development - Manual Handling and CPR
WANA provides all Nurses on the WANA Team with the opportunity to undertake Professional Development during their time in Australia. It is a condition of employment with WANA that you have evidence of attendance at recent MH or CPR updates. Prior to travelling to Oz – ensure that you have this proof included in your documentation.

Mobile Phones
To be assured of getting the work that you want it is best if you can purchase a mobile phone so that you are contactable at all times. On your arrival in Oz – shop around for a good deal and buy a mobile – be aware that if you are travelling around Australia you will need to go with the network that has the best coverage – check out the following web site for more information. Documentation to bring to Oz
HOT TIP! All employers will ask you for a detailed CV – why not set up an email account and email yourself a copy of your CV so that you don’t have to cart extra paperwork around with you on your travels.

Written references – get 2 references from your recent Clinical Nurse Managers on hospital letterhead and bring with you – failing that make certain you have email addresses for these people.

What To Bring

Certified Copies of Documents
Take your original document with the copied (Tip: get a few copies done at the same time), so the certifying person can view and confirm the original copy. The person certifying the document must write the following: “I certify this document is a true copy of the original” and sign and date, adding in block capitals their name, their position and address. Your application may be rejected if you only have a signed statement.

Who can certify Documentation
Justice of the Peace, Notary of Public, Commissioner of Declarations, Postmasters.

Uniforms
Most hospitals in Australia are happy for you to wear a combination of navy bottoms and a white shirt – most agencies will supply you with a uniform shirt. So if you can pack your nursing shoes and a pair of navy trousers then you are right to start work on arrival.

Fees
Each State or Territory nursing registration you apply for will require the payment of a fee. The fee amounts are documented on each State Nursing Registration Board.
